About LA CARMINA

Welcome to my Spookyville! I chronicle my alt fashion and travel adventures on my La Carmina blog (http://www.lacarmina.com/blog) -- Japanese Goth Punk fashion, alternative subcultures, young Visual Kei boys and cute earless cats. I split time between Tokyo, LA, Vancouver, and wherever my work in TV hosting and travel writing takes me. I’m a journalist for CNNGo and Huffington Post Travel, and wrote three books including Cute Yummy Time (http://www.lacarmina.com/cookingcute.php) and Crazy Wacky Theme Restaurants: Tokyo (http://www.lacarmina.com/ tokyorestaurants.php). My “First Mate” and I run a coolhunting / trend consulting / promo and TV fixing company: La Carmina & The Pirates. The team specializes in cosplay, Goth, burlesque, LGBT, Jpop and underground culture. (http://www.lacarmina.com/pirates) I host and arrange travel TV shows, mostly in Tokyo. Credits include Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods, Canal Plus France, NHK, Sony Australia, Norway TV, Belgium TV, Dutch Pepsi. The site was launched in September 2007

History of the blog
When I began my blog in September 2007, I was Yale Law student at crossroads -- I needed to be in a more creative field. Blogging was the perfect way to share my love of Harajuku fashion and subcultures. Upon graduation, I had 2 books (Random House, Penguin) and other projects in the works, so I decided to pursue this road instead. And never turned back. I grew up in Vancouver with no media/entertainment connections whatsoever, so my blog let me break into tight-knit industries such as TV hosting. Every day, I’m amazed at the opportunities that arrive in my inbox; my adventures keep getting weirder, and I love it!

Future plans for the blog
I am very lucky that all my work revolves around my passions -- for youth subcultures, Gothic, Japan, alternative art and expression. I feel fortunate I am able to work in a variety of mediums, such as writing and TV hosting. I love every aspect of my work. However, I feel I’ve only gotten started -- there’s so much more I’ve yet to accomplish. I want to continue with the TV hosting, and work in a variety of creative media. I'm currently in talks with a major producer and network to host my own TV show. Five years ago, I couldn’t possibly have imagined I’d be in the place I am now. I hope that five years from now, I’ll have evolved as much. Or more.
