About Abigail King

Abigail King is an experienced journalist and photographer who writes about travel for print and online publications and biomedical science for academic journals. She has circled the globe twice, camped in the snows of Kilimanjaro and Patagonia and tracked down tigers, turtles and panda bears. She’s then had a hot shower and embraced the city life of New York, Rio, Paris and Tokyo. She has interviewed Michelin-starred chefs, Formula One Race Engineers, aid workers, ministers, Tlingit elders and plenty of people on the street. Her travel and editorial work has appeared in National Geographic’s Intelligent Travel, France Today, Lonely Planet, easyJet Traveller, Desert Leaf, Travel Intelligence, Most Wanted, The Huffington Post and more. She’s also written countless city and regional guides.

Something not commonly know about Abigail King:
I’m a travel writer and photographer who was thrilled to discover that asking a lot of questions was seen as a good thing in this line of work. My rather unusual training began with a career in neuroscience research followed by medical school and several years spent working as a doctor in Emergency Medicine. It’s that scientific background that explains the name Inside the Travel Lab. To me, a lab is a place for insight and discovery, for inspiration and for looking at a “problem” in a whole new way. To be inside that, is to be right where the action is.

About Inside the Travel Lab

About Me: I'm Abi King, a journalist and photographer who swapped a career as a hospital doctor for a life on the road. Inside the Travel Lab blogs about independent cultural travel and adventure. About finding unusual journeys. About bringing travel inspiration home with you, even if you can’t be on the road. About laughing at the crazy things we humans do and sparing a thought for those in need. About learning about the world and, yes, as cheesy as it sounds, trying to make it a better place. The site was launched in March 2009

History of the blog
I started this blog when I left my job as a hospital doctor and embarked on a career in freelance writing and photography. It’s grown a lot since then and just like a proud parent I’m overcome with the urge to tell you about every single achievement (mentioned on National Geographic’s Intelligent Traveler, rated as one of the world’s Top 150 Travel Blogs by Invesp, sometimes even read by my mum.) Inside the Travel Lab regularly reaches the "best travel blog" and "most inspiring travel blog" lists, whether based on statistics or subjective assessment.

Future plans for the blog
Readership and reach on other social networks have been increasing month on month for more than a year and I expect that trend to continue. In 2011, Inside the Travel Lab will feature even more photographs and videos alongside its text and has negotiated partnerships with several other influential companies.
