About Meg Pier
Meg is founder and proprietor of www.ViewfromthePier.com and a regular contributor to the travel section of Boston Globe, the website of CBS News travel correspondent Peter Greenberg and the Huffington Post. After a 25-year run as an award-winning executive in financial services, Meg felt she had “been there and done that,” world-weary and with the weight of the world on her shoulders. A cosmic kick in the pants in the form of a cancer scare prompted her to look at her priorities and dare to pursue her real passions—travel, writing and photography. She left Corporate America and launched www.ViewfromthePier.com two years ago; its tagline is her new mission statement: "Connecting with self, others and a sense of wonder through travel."
About View from the Pier
www.ViewfromthePier offers several distinct and complimentary features. Each day the site's home page features a fresh photograph from Meg's travels around the world, captioned by an uplifting quotation. A link to this daily photo/quote is available via a free subscription and this image/inspiration combo serves as the basis for Meg's bi-monthly blog, which is part travelogue and part Life Lesson. The site was launched in April 2009
History of the blog
The "Compass Rose" (http://www.viewfromthepier.com/compass-rose/) is a regular in-depth destination feature focusing on a facet of a given region's culture or broader travel themes. Recent topics covered to date include a series on flamenco, recently designated by UNESCO as an item of intangible cultural heritage; a series on the history, culture and geography of Cyprus through the lens of its Orthodox Christianity; a three-part series on the different types of pilgrimages and why people undertake these journeys; and pieces on Santa Fe's fiber arts trail, the Yucatan's sacred cenotes, and the "Cathar Country" of southwestern France. A monthly Q & A called "Peer to Pier" (http://www.viewfromthepier.com/peertopier/) profiles interesting people with whom Meg has crossed paths, as a window into a country or area. Past subjects have included a Mayan shaman, Kenyan eco architect, Icelandic artist, Maltese archaeologist and Belizean eco lodge owner. Interviews on broader global themes have featured the CEO of the UN Foundation and the chief of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage section. The “Guest Room” column (http://www.viewfromthepier.com/guestroom/) serves as a platform for fellow writers/travellers to share their experiences of the Power of Place.
