The phenomenal increase in social networking is something that we all know about, however here are a few interesting facts and figures that show you how big it really has become:
• eMarketer estimates that 41% of the US Internet user population, equivalent to nearly 80 million people, visited social network sites at least once a month in 2008. By 2013 an estimated 52% of Internet users will be regular social network visitors.
• eMarketer projects that 79.7 million people in the US will create content on social networks at least once a month in 2009, either by updating a profile or communicating publicly. This equates to 40% of all US Internet users and 90.5% of social network users.
• comScore revealed that 74.6% of the 210 million people who use the web in Europe used social networking sites during December 2008.
• According to TNS more than one-half of UK teens have a social networking profile and more than one-third of UK Internet users ages 18 to 55 had visited such sites in December 2008.
• Compete revealed that Facebook is now the No. 1 social network in the US, with 68.8 million unique visitors and nearly 1.2 billion visits in January 2009.
• There are currently 147million mobile social network users worldwide, and this will likely increase to 803 million by 2012.
